WHITT POSTS A WIN AND A SEVENTH IN TWO SPRINT CAR EVENTS |
Monday, May 4, 2009 – The season is starting to roll now for Cole Whitt, and with racing available two to three nights every weekend, Cole has been busy with the preparation and maintenance of not only his family owned car but also working with his national team at Keith Kunz Motorsports. This weekend saw Cole race two of the three scheduled nights, and both of the races had very positive results returned.
After a rainout at Gas City, IN on Friday, Whitt parked the 29w and the USAC National Sprint Car series moved to the ¼ mile Anderson Speedway pavement sprint car race. The track is known as a fast tight track that has a single racing line. Cole qualified in the 7th position and finished 2nd in the heat race. In the 100 lap feature Cole drove to a strong finish with a very loose race car and was able to keep his starting position and finish 7th. Cole’s seventh place meant that he moved up a position in the USAC National point standings. He is now in fifth position and gained points on three of the four drivers in front of him.
Once Cole left Anderson, it was time to move back to focusing on opening night at Kokomo Speedway. The ¼ mile dirt track’s weekly sprint car race is known as one of the best in the country. 35 cars showed up for Sunday’s race and most of the drivers are the same drivers Cole races in the USAC National series. Cole and his co-crew chief Chuck Gurney Jr. brought the no. 29w C-Squared Red Bull Sprint Car to Kokomo looking to repeat last weekend’s race win at Gas City. After overcoming a car with a ton of rear bite in qualifying (which created huge, crowd pleasing wheelies!), Cole was able to qualify 3rd and take his no 29w through the heat race and transfer into the Main event, where he would start 4th. Once into the 25 lap feature, Cole was able to handle a very bumpy treacherous race track. Cole’s smooth driving rhythm allowed him to pick through the cars in front and move to the lead. After a mid race battle with Bryan Clauson that eventually saw Clauson end up collected with a backmarker, Cole raced to a very popular victory for the sell out Kokomo crowd.
Whitt said of the weekend, “We had a good points race on Saturday and great win on Sunday at Kokomo. Chuck and I have worked really hard to get the 29w ready for our C-Squared races and so far we are two for two. With the amount of talent on hand for Sunday’s race, we are pleased to have the win. The Kokomo fans are great and the racing tonight was very intense. A number of guys I race with had big flips and it was important to find a balance between running hard through the corners without upsetting the car too much. Now, we get ready for another weekend of KKM/C-Squared action. I can’t wait!”
