Monday, March 23, 2009 – If you have followed Cole Whitt in 2009 you will recall that Cole ran in a very abbreviated stock car event at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale in January. Due to weather, TV scheduling, and a sound curfew, the race Cole was set to compete in was shortened to a 15 minute green flag event where the field was set by a draw rather than qualifying. The Toyota Speedway at Irwindale management and the team owners for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Super Late Model series came together and used opening night for the 2009 season to re-host the January abbreviated race event.
For Cole Whitt, this meant that So. Cal stock car racing legend Rip Michaels graciously offered to bring Cole back to compete in the 100 lap opener in the Dan Moore owned #93 Super Late Model. Cole was excited for the opportunity to once again take what he has learned in sprint car / midget racing and apply it to this very different racing machine.

With a short 25 minute practice session, Cole worked progressively with the team to find a setup that was comfortable for not only qualifying, but also the race itself. When qualifying took place, Cole was able to post the seventh in qualifying with less than 1/10th of a second separating the top 8 cars in a 33 total Super Late Model field. The race itself would be a new challenge for Cole as it was set for 100 laps and would not only be one of the longest events he has competed in but only his 2ndcareer stock car start. The length of the event, would not pose a problem, however, as Cole was able to take his third starting position and race with the leaders for the entire event. At the green flag Cole settled in to 5th spot and as the race progressed he was able create several nice passes advancing him to 3rd. After a restart near the half way mark, Cole got shuffled back to fifth, but by working the outside and the bottom of the track, Whitt worked hard for the final laps and passed Michaels himself, for an impressive fourth place at the finish.

Whitt had this to say, “After the last event in January I was hoping to get back in a stock car to actually race. Rip Michaels and Dan Moore, gave me this opportunity, and I was happy to get the chance. The team was great to work with and I learned a lot about the handling of the stock car, I had a blast. I am pleased with my fourth place finish and look forward to going stock car racing again soon!”
