It’s at this time of year that the true character of a driver is found. At this time of year the racing has been ongoing for more than five months straight. With two solid months left. Cole Whitt is showing no let up after a solid weekend where he posted two wins in three nights. The events, two midget races and a sprint car race, were apart of another action filled weekend in the summer of sprint and midget racing in the Midwest.
Friday night at Dodge County Speedway started the weekend the right way. A seventh quick in qualifying meant that Cole would start near the rear of the heat race. This was affirmed for the no. 71 car as he started in 6th and converted this position into a heat victory. Once the feature was aligned, Cole knew that he had a great car that could win. Upon starting the 30 lap feature Whitt quickly moved to the lead. After a surviving 5 restarts during the feature, Cole lead wire to wire and captured his first USAC National Midget victory. This result meant that Cole moved closer to the overall lead in the USAC National Midget Points. After the great win in Beaver Dam, Cole and the Keith Kunz team moved on to Angell Park Speedway for the Fireman’s Nationals $15,000 to win Midget non-USAC event. Most of the drivers from Friday night moved on to Angell Park for Saturday night. Cole felt comfortable immediately in qualifying and this transferred to a top five position. As the heat racing transpired, Cole raced from 8th to finish 4th transferring him to the feature. With a 10 car inversion for this special race, Cole started the feature in 8th position. Dealing with a tight race car on a tricky surface, Cole finished the 50 lap feature in a mature 8th position. Kokomo Speedway was the scene for return to action for Cole and his “covert ops” C-Squared crew. The no. 29w was focused on winning. After a second in qualifying, Cole moved quickly to the feature. Once in the feature Cole and his good friend Jon Stanbrough put on a race for the fans to remember. As Cole started fifth and Jon started third in the feature, both were focused on the win. Jon and Cole put on a show racing to the front dicing through lapped traffic, with Whitt on the low side and Stanbrough high. On the final lap, Whitt was able to beat the veteran Jon Stanbrough at the finish line for a photo finish victory. With the momentum, look forward to further Cole Whitt updates from next weekend’s races.
